The Eel fire started at 3:28 p.m. on July 31, 2018. It burned 972 acres and ultimately reached 100% containment, according to CAL FIRE's official incident record.
During the fire, 10 structures were threatened in the Black butte River Ranch area. An Aug. 1 report said containment and residential-destruction figures were not yet available at that time.

The fire burned near Indian Dick Road and mendocino pass Road, east of Covelo. That location is in Mendocino County, not Humboldt County.
The U.S. Forest Service's Mendocino National Forest had jurisdiction over the incident. This official location and jurisdiction make "Humboldt County" an inaccurate description of the Eel Fire.

Humboldt county agencies provided mutual aid during the broader regional fire emergency. Mutual aid means personnel or equipment sent to help another jurisdiction.
The North Coast Journal reported that 32 firefighters from nine Humboldt agencies assisted incidents in Mendocino and Lake counties. Their deployment did not move the Eel Fire's location into Humboldt County.
