CAL FIRE's 2026 archive does not list a Grade Fire in Calaveras County on August 24. The official record therefore does not support a report under that name or date. The documented Calaveras County incident closest to that description is the Gann Fire. It started earlier in August near Valley Springs and was contained before August 24.

What the official record shows

The CAL FIRE 2026 incident archive contains no Grade Fire entry for Calaveras County. This may reflect an incorrect fire name, date, or location. CAL FIRE reports that the Gann Fire began at 5:27 p.m.

on August 3 near Hogan Dam Road and Gann Road in Valley Springs. The Gann Fire incident page lists equipment use as the cause. The fire burned 10,339 acres and reached 100% containment on August 12 after nine days of activity.

Damage, injury and evacuation impacts

A CAL FIRE operational update recorded 45 structures destroyed and three damaged. It also reported one injured firefighter and one civilian death.

Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for Calaveras county on August 6. The fire had threatened communities, homes, and power infrastructure. At that point, 1,473 residents had evacuated and approximately 1,400 remained under evacuation warnings, according to the Governor's Office emergency proclamation.

However, the missing Grade Fire entry cannot prove that no smaller or newly developing incident occurred. CAL FIRE says its incident website is not intended for immediate evacuation or fire-behavior information and generally does not list fires smaller than 10 acres.
