CalWORKs is California’s cash assistance programme for families with children. It is state policy delivered entirely by counties, which is why the rules are uniform but the office you deal with is local.

Who it is for

According to the California Department of Social Services, CalWORKs serves families in need across all 58 counties. Eligible families include those with children deprived of parental support because of a parent’s absence, disability or death, and also families with both parents in the home where the principal earner is unemployed.

That second category is the one people wrongly rule themselves out of. A two-parent household is not automatically ineligible.

What it provides

Qualifying families receive monthly cash payments based on family size and special needs, alongside services. The aid is intended to help with housing, food, utilities, clothing and medical care.

Counties run it

CDSS oversees the programme, but it is operated locally by county welfare departments. Your county processes the application, conducts the interview and issues the aid. Contact details, office locations and appointment practices differ county by county.

How to apply

Two routes: online through BenefitsCal, or in person at a welfare office in your county of residence. The same portal handles other programmes, so a single application can start more than one benefit.

It sits alongside other programmes, not instead of them

Families receiving CalWORKs are often eligible for CalFresh food benefits and Medi-Cal as well. Receiving public assistance also qualifies you outright for a court fee waiver, which matters if a family law matter is part of your situation.

If you are already receiving aid

Questions about an existing case go to your local county social services agency rather than to the state. The state sets policy; the county holds your file.

Payment levels and eligibility rules are revised periodically. Confirm current figures with your county welfare department or CDSS.
