What Time Do Polls Close in California? 8 p.m., and What Comes Next

California polls close at 8 p.m. Pacific time tonight, Tuesday, Nov. 3, and any voter standing in line at that moment keeps the right to cast a ballot. Voting began at 7 a.m. at polling places and vote centers statewide, according to the Secretary of State’s election calendar, and 8 p.m. is also the last moment to hand in a ballot in person or at a drop box.

Where it stands: As of early Tuesday afternoon, voting is under way across all 58 counties and no results have been reported. Under state rules, counties may not share any tallies before the polls close, and the first semi-official numbers start appearing shortly after 8 p.m.

This guide covers the closing-time rules and tonight’s reporting rhythm. For the weeks-long count that follows, see our explainer on why California election results take weeks.

What time do California polls close?

California polls close at 8 p.m. local time, which is 11 p.m. on the East Coast. The Secretary of State’s calendar for this election puts it in one line: “Election Day – Polls shall be open throughout the state from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.”

That is a single statewide closing time. Unlike states that straddle two time zones, every California county closes at the same moment, whether a voter is in Crescent City or Calexico. The schedule is the same at a traditional neighborhood polling place and at a vote center in one of the counties that use the Voter’s Choice Act model.

Can I still vote in California if I’m in line at 8 p.m.?

Yes. The state’s Voter Bill of Rights protects anyone who is already waiting when 8 p.m. arrives: a voter in line at closing gets to cast a ballot. If you reach the line before 8 p.m., stay in it, even if it moves slowly; leaving gives up that protection.

Several other rights on the same list matter on a busy evening:

  • Your name is missing from the roster. You can still vote with a provisional ballot, which is counted once officials confirm you are eligible.
  • You are not registered yet. Same-day registration is open through today. The Secretary of State says eligible citizens may register “at their local county elections office or any in-person voting location within their county,” then vote provisionally.
  • You have your mail ballot with you. Any polling place in the state will take your filled-out mail ballot, not only sites in your own county.

Anyone who is turned away or sees a problem can call the state’s toll-free voter line, (800) 345-VOTE (8683).

What is the ballot drop-off deadline today?

The drop-off cutoff matches closing time: 8 p.m. The state’s election page says “November 3 is the last day to vote in-person or return a ballot by 8:00 p.m.” That covers official drop boxes, county elections offices and in-person voting sites.

Mailing a ballot today carries more risk. Through the U.S. Postal Service, an envelope needs an Election Day postmark or earlier and must reach the county office by Nov. 10. Handing the envelope in at a drop box or vote center before 8 p.m. removes any question about the postmark. Our vote-by-mail guide explains the envelope signature rules, and you can track your ballot to confirm it was received.

When do first results come in after California polls close?

The first returns arrive soon after 8 p.m. FOX 11 Los Angeles, summarizing state guidance, reported that “Results will begin to be posted at 8 p.m. and will be updated throughout Election Night” on the Secretary of State’s results website, electionresults.sos.ca.gov. Each county also runs its own results page.

Those early numbers are a particular slice of the vote. Counties can open and prepare mail envelopes for weeks ahead of time, but they may not release any count until voting ends. According to FOX 11’s summary of state rules, “The first results are typically ballots received before Election Day, which include vote-by-mail ballots and early-voting location ballots.” Ballots cast in person today and mail ballots dropped off today come later.

Late night Counties finish election-night semifinal tallies Secretary of State

San Francisco has published one of the most detailed timetables. Its Department of Elections plans four preliminary reports tonight. The opening one, due around 8:45 p.m., covers most mail ballots processed ahead of Election Day; the next two follow near 9:45 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. as polling-place totals come in. A last report follows once every polling place has reported. For its ranked-choice local races, the department says the middle two reports “will include only first-choice vote totals for these contests.”

How often do California counties update results on election night?

State rules set a floor: once counting starts at 8 p.m., counties must send updated semifinal totals to the Secretary of State no less often than once every two hours until the election-night tally is finished. Many counties post more often than that.

The pace depends on how fast ballots physically reach the counting center. In Los Angeles County, the registrar’s June primary media kit explains that “When Vote Centers close, Election Workers will complete their closing procedures and then deliver their ballots to Sheriff’s Deputies at a designated Check-in Center.” Deputies then drive them to the county’s ballot processing center. In that June election, the county scheduled its first results for 8:30 to 8:45 p.m., with ballots cast at vote centers before Election Day added between 8:45 and 9 p.m. “Once all ballots are counted, we will release the Semi-Final Results,” the kit says.

Large counties can run late. In 2020, San Diego County’s registrar warned that “It may be midnight, however, before all polling place ballots arrive at the Registrar’s,” and that its final unofficial election-night update “may not come in until after 3 a.m.” That was a different election with different rules, but it shows how the last election-night post in a big county can land well after midnight.

Could a polling place stay open past 8 p.m.?

The statewide closing time is fixed, but county officials plan for exceptions. Because no county may release numbers until voting has ended everywhere in the state, extended hours in one place can push back first reports elsewhere. San Francisco says that “If extended voting hours elsewhere in the state affect San Francisco’s reporting schedule,” it will post a notice on its results page.

What happens to the count after tonight?

Election night ends with the semifinal canvass, not a final result. After the overnight push, counties move to a slower posting schedule they set themselves. Los Angeles County’s June primary pattern was counting from 3:30 p.m. and results posted “between 4:00 – 5:00 PM” on scheduled days, and San Francisco plans updates around 4 p.m. daily from Nov. 4 through Nov. 13, skipping Veterans Day. Each county publishes its own calendar, so check your registrar’s results page for local timing.

Contests that are close tonight, including several congressional seats covered in our California House races to watch, may stay unresolved for days as late mail and provisional ballots are added. The state’s published calendar sets the endpoint: certified statewide results are due by Dec. 11.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time do California polls close today?

Can I still vote if I am in line at 8 p.m.?

Yes. The state Voter Bill of Rights protects voters who are already waiting at closing time. Stay in line until you have voted.

Is it too late to mail my ballot on Election Day?

It can still count, as long as the envelope carries an Election Day postmark or earlier and your county receives it by Nov. 10. Postmark times vary by post office, so dropping the ballot at a drop box or vote center before 8 p.m. is the safer choice today.

When will the first California results be posted tonight?

Counties start posting after 8 p.m. The first numbers usually reflect mail and early in-person ballots that arrived before Election Day. In San Francisco, the opening report is planned for roughly 8:45 p.m.

Yes. Same-day registration runs through Election Day at your county elections office or any in-person voting location in your county. You will cast a provisional ballot that is counted once your eligibility is confirmed.
